The mission of First Presbyterian Church of Pompano Beach is to preach and teach Jesus Christ and to serve in His name by providing a loving, supportive, and Christ-filled place of worship and spiritual activities that help bring people to Christ and promote fellowship and outreach to the congregation, community and the world.
From The Pastor
Reverend Wayne J. Myers came to First Presbyterian Church in 2015 from Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church in Oak Park, IL. “I believe we at First Presbyterian Church are called to work differently than the world around us. Quite often, as Christians, we have to become “counter-cultural”. If the world is frantic, we need to be a haven of peace. If the world is alienating, we need to be a place of hospitality. If the world is selfish, we need to be a center for sharing. If the world is cynical, we must be people who trust. People don’t come to church for more of the same old thing. They come to experience God. They come seeking a family of faith, a true community, where they will be embraced for who they are and where their abilities will be used for the blessing of the world.”
Some of the principles articulated by sixteenth-century theologian, John Calvin, are still at the core of Presbyterian beliefs. Among these are the sovereignty of God, the authority of Scripture, justification by grace through faith, and the priesthood of all believers. What these tenets mean is that God is the supreme authority throughout the universe. Our knowledge of God and God’s purpose for humanity comes from the Bible, particularly what is revealed in the New Testament through the life of Jesus Christ.
Our salvation (justification) through Jesus is God’s generous gift to us and not the result of our own accomplishments. It is everyone’s job — ministers and laypeople alike — to share this Good News with the whole world. That is also why the Presbyterian church is governed at all levels by a combination of clergy and laity, men and women alike. More than two million people call the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) their spiritual home. Worshiping in 10,000 Presbyterian congregations throughout the United States, they engage the communities in which they live and serve with God’s love.
First Presbyterian Church belongs to the Presbyterian Church (USA) – PC(USA) – denomination. We believe that God comes to us in free and undeserved favor in the person of Jesus Christ who lived, died, and rose for us that we might belong to God and serve Christ in the world. Following Jesus, being called to ministry in His name, we seek to continue His mission of teaching the truth, feeding the hungry, healing the broken, and welcoming strangers. God sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, giving us the energy, intelligence, imagination, and love to be Christ’s faithful disciples in the world.
Baptism is one of the most significant parts of our worship. We baptize both adults and children. In both types of baptism, God is at work in the lives of the one being baptized.
Both the Sanctuary and the Chapel are available for weddings throughout the year.
The availability of the venues is coordinated by the Pastoral Administrator, Cyle Morpeth. The Pastor of First Presbyterian Church must officiate at all weddings, but couples may request the participation of additional clergy during the ceremony. The details and role of the guest clergy will be determined by the Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church. The usage fees are variable based on location and date.
